In the city of Chicago, it doesn't matter if you're Chinese or Vietnamese, Indian or Pilipino. Whatever your background is, you're welcome to celebrate the Lunar New Year - and the 27th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration hosted by the Asian American Coalition of Chicago (AACC) was no exception. On Jan. 23, 2010, the AACC welcomed nearly 1,000 guests to an annual event that honors community leaders and standout youth from about 16 different Asian ethnicities.

I'm sitting in the back of the historic Portage Theater in Chicago. Exhausted from a full day of coding and a full evening of interviewing and networking, all I wanted to do was sit back and enjoy the last performance of Pin@ypalooza.

That's when he did it - AJ Rafael incited a riot in Chicago!

Pilipino Food Gets Sexy, And Gives Back, In Chicago

What do Vince Vaughn, the Chicago Bulls, and a restaurant that serves San Miguel and pancit have in common?  They are the answers the public gave when Victoria's Secret asked "What's Sexy Now Chicago?"  And you can't find a much bigger authority on sexiness than Victoria's Secret.

To be fair, this is not your neighborhood Pilipino restaurant.  Sunda, which opened its doors in March of 2009, is the newest downtown place to be seen.

The film "Brown Soup Thing" recently had a successful screening at the inaugural Filipino International Film Festival Los Angeles this past weekend (click here for what else played there), but the movie's premiere happened at the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival.  Now preparing for their 6th annual festival, it will take place in the historic Portage Theater from November 6-8, 2009, and they just announced their list of selections.  I also got the chance to talk with a former entrant to get his take on his experiences and what he wants to see come from the Pilipino film community.

I will readily admit that I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the arts.  I'm more of a techie myself, but I can appreciate when technology is used to create art.  This is why I was initially intrigued by the opening of the Chicago Artists' Coalition's new gallery entitled "Cut & Paste", which featured collages that were created by repeatedly cutting and pasting images (both physically and via the computer).  My interest turned into visiting the gallery opening when I read about one of the artists, Jun-Jun Sta.Ana, was raised in the Philippines and is a recent transplant to Chicago.  My visit was justified when I noticed they were serving lumpia at the art gallery, and being able to talk with Jun-Jun completed the night.

Adobofest 2009 Crowns "Chicago's Best Adobo"

While FPAC was happening on the West Coast, the Pilipino community of Chicago was also gathering together to celebrate their accomplishments and culture.  However, our gathering was a bit more focused on one aspect of our culture: the food!  The second annual Adobofest was put on by the Filipino American Network of Chicago (FAN Chicago) in order to find the city's best adobo.  During his trip to the Philippines, Anthony Bourdain was confused by the fact that there was no clear definition of what identifies Pilipino food, and concluded that it's really defined by its diversity.  That was quite clear at Adobofest, where there was everything from traditional chicken and pork adobo to adobo with plantains to tofu adobo.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Michael Copon - An Exclusive Interview in Chicago

Michael CoponWhenever recess hit in the 5th grade, or while I was at my family friends' playing outside, there was always one show my friends and I would want to emulate: Power Rangers. The Ninja Turtles had run their course, and Dragonball Z had yet to hit our shores. While we had the imagination to pretend we were superhero martial artists, we never considered acting on the show as one. Michael Copon, a Pilipino from Virginia, actually got to live the life as the Blue Time Force Power Ranger, which began his career as a television and film actor. BakitWhy.com had the chance to meet up with Michael during a recent weekend trip he had to Chicago.

There's just one week left to get your entries in for the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival (CFAFF)! Now in their 6th year, the CFAFF will take place in the historic Portage Theater in the heart of Chicago. They are looking for entries across all their categories: feature length (over an hour), shorts (under an hour), documentary (feature-length and short) and music video. There is no entry fee, and as long as the film has a Pilipino/Pilipino-American theme or has Pilipinos/Pilipino-Americans involved in its production, it's eligible to be part of the fest. You have until September 1st to submit your work!

Chicago is celebrating Philippine Independence Day by bringing culture to the kids.  Amidst all the play areas, building stations, and art rooms, the Pilipino community has taken over a large chunk of the Chicago Children's Museum, located at Navy Pier (the most popular tourist attraction in Chicago).  The event, which kicked off June 11 and continues June 13 and June 14, showcases a mix of Pilipino music, dance, art and costume to families of the Second City.
