FIND Conference 2010: Laban

Members of the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND) network came together to the University of Maryland for their Spring Conference on February 27th, 2010.  The theme for the conference was "Laban" (the Tagalog word for “to Fight”), which was aimed towards shedding light into the past struggles from when Pilipinos first came to the United States, the struggles that we face today, and how to combat these issues. The conference was split up into three sessions that were comprised of three different workshops each, which allowed the delegates to pick and learn about subjects they may be interested in.

On November 7th, members of the Pilipino community converged onto the Rutgers University Busch Campus for "SUKOB," a fundraiser to help with typhoon relief efforts.  In addition to the donated medical supplies, all of the proceeds from the event go to benefit the Ayala Foundation USA. Inspired by the desire to come to the aid of those who have been affected by the typhoons in the Philippines, the President of the Rutgers Association of Philippine Students (RAPS), Amanda Yu, and Jay Legaspi, of the Sensitive Guys With Guitars (SGWG) sprung into action.  In a matter of days, they were able to gain the support of the Filipino League at Seton Hall (FLASH) through their President, Matt Pana, the various talents of SGWG and RAPS, secured a venue at the Rutgers University Busch Campus, and the support of volunteers and the University.



"SUKOB" - A Talent Showcase and Fundraiser for Medical Aid benefitting Typhoon Victims

On November 7, 2009, the Rutgers Association of Philippine Students (RAPS) will present SUKOB, a talent showcase to benefit those in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana). The Filipino League at Seton Hall (FLASH) and artist collective Sensitive Guys with Guitars (SGWG) are providing additional assistance and talent for the night. The showcase starts at 7:00PM and is being held at the Allison Road Classroom Building (Room 103) on Rutgers University’s Busch Campus, located on 618 Allison Road, in Piscataway, NJ. The show is open to the public and is $10 or $5 with a donation of medical supplies.

GMU MakinigOn October 10th, close to 900 Pilipinos from the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) converged onto George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia for "Makinig II."  "Makinig," meaning "to listen," was a show put on by GMU's Pilipino Cultural Association and the Asian Pacific American Council with donations and proceeds going to Gawad Kalinga's Operation GK: Walang Iwanan, which is aimed at providing relief efforts for those victimized by Typhoon Ondoy.

On June 24, 2009, Deep Foundation hosted an event at New York City’s White Rabbit Lounge, for the premiere of their new music video, “Sleep” which also features R&B singer, Jay Legaspi.  The event proved to be a successful turnout as friends and family of the hip hop group and singer came out to show their support.  Director, Choz Belen, was also present for the night promoting the work he did on “Sleep.” This is the second video directed by Belen, the first being Deep Foundation’s video for “A Place Called Home.” The new video features an animation style, which according to Belen was influenced by a documentary he had seen.
