Jump for joy and let it rain popcorn, because BakitWhy.com's resident film dorks are back for their 2nd Annual Oscar Close-Up.  You remember their first one, right?  Just pretend you do.  It was from a year ago.  Anyway, without further ado, let's let's turn it over to our resident people with names of three letters or less... Cat & Ed!

Another year of Oscars, another year of the same old same old.  Keyword: OLD.  The only “new” stuff is the Academy adding five more mediocre movie nominations and an extra host.  Worry not, our predictions are at the conclusion of this 2nd Annual Cat & Ed Oscar Close-Up extravaganza, but first we've put together some awards we wish could give out, if we were members of the Academy (just you wait and see!).

Brown Soup Thing MovieBrown Soup Thing is a comedy-drama about the Mansaluds - a comfortably disconnected Pilipino American family who puts the “fun” in dysfunctional.

In order to raise her unacceptable “A-“ grade average at school, the youngest Mansalud, 10 year-old Lita (Sari Arambulo), must submit a video project about “what it means to be a Pilipino in America”. Luckily for her, Lita’s upcoming birthday provides the perfect setting to unite everyone: parents Alfred (Russ Bautista) & Philomena (Anne Santiago), brother Jude (Wil Olandria), sisters Fely (The Flip Side’s Rona Par), Maria (Kimee Balmilero from Hi-5), & Shana (The Bold & The Beautiful’s Cheryl Noe), an array of cousins including Cousin Jenilee (Jenilee Reyes from Deal or No Deal), Cousin Bong-bong (Room to Improv’s Earl Baylon, Cousin Joey (Joey Guila from HBO’s P Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy), and her Lola (grandmother) who just wants to cook a myriad of mouth-watering delicacies, including the movie’s titular dish – the Brown Soup Thing.

Rob SchneiderLOS ANGELES, CA -- Even Rob Schneider wanted to watch Brown Soup Thing. And he left the building the same way the rest of a packed Los Angeles Theatre Center did: entertained and hungry.

The premiere of the acclaimed Brown Soup Thing in Los Angeles was a star-studded, red carpet affair that had fans laughing, craving food, and able to relate to the Filipino American experience from the unique vantage point of writer/director Edward J. Mallillin. Combining laughs, characters that the audience could relate to, and Mallillin's thought-provoking observations on Filipino life in America, Brown Soup Thing left a strong, positive impression at the Filipino International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Seven course meal.  Yes, seven courses.  What Rene Emmanuel Villapando did to our collective (now bigger) gut was simply criminal.  But his customers didn't seem to mind, as they kept coming back for seconds.  And thirds.  And so on.  Rene Emmanuel Villapando's Asian Soul Food Tasting Party was a huge hit with a packed crowd this past month in Studio City.

In other words, it's a foodie's dream come true.

There's been a wave of hilarious Pilipino American comics in the last several years.  Jo Koy, Justin Rivera, and Joey Guila especially come to mind.  But before all of them, there was Rex Navarrete, who has been making audiences laugh for two decades with his signature brand of comedy geared towards Philippine Americans.

You might say he's the comedian for us.

During my most recent visit to the Philippines (in 2007) I spent a lot of time in Quezon City getting to know the people who make up the independent cinema movement that's all the rage in their entertainment community.  The enthusiasm and dedication recalls the American directors from the 1970s (Scorsese, Coppola, Altman) and more recently the American indie glory years from the 1990s (Tarantino, Rodriguez, Smith).
