Hi! My name is Bien-Elize Roque and I learned about this opportunity to share my experiences in the Philippines through BakitWhy.com. I went to the Philippines last year for 3 months to do some volunteer work, and Typhoon Ondoy happened while I was there. I ended up being able to volunteer, and was able to help put up a group that helped the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. The attached is my account of how it had been while I was there and the pictures are from some of the things we did.

AJ RafaelCome join AJ Rafael and Mahal Foundation in a mission excursion to the Philippines from February 1-8, 2010. This will be 7 days of serving the poor and the needy, learning about the Pilipino culture, and helping victims of the recent Typhoon Ondoy. You'll also have a chance to help impoverished school children to read and eat. You will walk away from this trip with a greater passion to end poverty in the Philippines.

A Call for the Pilipino BAYANIHAN Spirit in the Wake of Tropical Storm Ondoy

Bayanihan Ondoy KetsanaPronounced like "buy-uh-nee-hun," bayanihan is a Pilipino word derived from the word bayan meaning “town”, “nation”, or “community” in general. "Bayanihan" literally means, "being a bayan," and is thus used to refer to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation.

Although bayanihan can manifest itself in many forms, it is probably most clearly and impressively displayed in the old tradition of neighbors helping a relocating family by getting enough volunteers to carry the whole house, and literally moving it to its new location.
