Eleven-time world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao came together at the Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning to formally announce their upcoming Welterweight world championship unification bout. In this first and only press conference together, both champions promised a great fight this coming May 2nd. This very well may be the most hyped fight in boxing history. It was kicked off by an almost 2 minute stare-off before each camp addressed the press.
Over 700 members of the media were credentialed for this press conference. Prior to the 2 fighters meeting on stage, each camp walked the red carpet with hundreds of media outlets shooting photos, conducting interviews, as well as providing live feeds all the way across the world and to the Philippines.
This fight is expected to be the richest ever boxing match in history. After 5 years of negotiations, it is likely to break every possible financial record in boxing. Pacquiao will potentially earn $80 million, and Mayweather, who is already the world's highest paid athlete, could take home $120 million just for this fight alone.
With all that being said, however, the atmosphere in the theater was more calm than anxious. Each fighter has promised their best because they will be fighting the best in each other.
“May 2 - the fight of the century. It is all about the best fighting the best and Pacquiao is one of the best fighters of this era. And everything is about timing and we couldn't choose a better time...I’m in the gym working right now. Dedicating myself to the sport. Pushing myself to the limit, because I’ve never wanted to win a fight so bad in my life. And I’m pretty sure he’s going to push himself to the limit, because he wants to win just as bad as I want to....This is a fight that the world can’t miss. I want everyone to tune in. Mayweather. Pacquiao. The biggest fight in boxing history.”
“For the fans of boxing, I believe, this is what you are waiting for since five years ago. The fight is on and I know you are very excited. Both of us are going to undergo hard training for this fight and we will do our best on May 2 to make you (the fans) happy...I want to let the people know that there is God who can raise someone from nothing into something. And that's me. I came from nothing into something and I owe everything to God. He gave me this blessing. It's all credit to the Lord."
The event will take place Saturday May 2, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada at 9pm ET / 6pm PT. This will air Live on Pay-per-view, and tickets will range from $1500-$7500.
