Filipino heritage to be honored through food, culture and entertainment

(Virginia Beach, Va.) – The City of Virginia Beach, Beachevents and the local Filipino American community will host the first FilFest – a showcase of Filipino American culture, food and entertainment. The two-day celebration will be held during Filipino American History Month on Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 24, from noon to 10 p.m., at the Virginia Beach Town Center, 222 Central Park Avenue, Virginia Beach, Va., 23462. The event will be free and open to the public.

The family-friendly event will feature traditional cuisine, cultural performances, dance and music with guest appearances by:

·       Comedian Rex Navarrete
·       Singer/actress Stephanie Reese
·       Singer/songwriter/actor Martin Nievera
·       Retired NBA player Raymond Townsend

As dance is important to the Filipino culture, Dr. Allan Bergano will lead his team as they attempt to break the world record of the most people simultaneously dancing the “Tinikling,” a traditional dance involving jumping in and out of bamboo sticks. There will be an opportunity for audience participation.

The event will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. Signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the new policy signified the U.S. commitment to international civil rights and served as a legislative pathway for Filipinos, along with Asians, southern and eastern Europeans, and Africans to immigrate and to become U.S. citizens. Country quotas and limitations were in place prior to the passage of the INA.

With South Hampton Roads now home to more than 25,000 Filipinos and their families due to being the world's largest naval base, this intergenerational event will celebrate the region’s Filipino settlement and story through dance, music, food and the arts!
