Undocumented Illinois Residents Organize Rally and Action for Suspension of Deportations

A coalition of groups from around Illinois led by undocumented immigrants will be holding a rally and action at the Broadview Detention Center calling for a suspension of deportations from President Obama.

WHAT: Press conference, rally and action in front of Broadview Detention Center by Illinois groups led by undocumented immigrants. The group seeks to bring attention to the record-high deportations and separations of families taking place every day in Illinois and around the country.

They will be calling for President Obama to suspend deportations, and highlighting three local cases where Illinois families are being separated by harsh enforcement practices. The group, many of whom qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) will also ask Illinois Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) to issue a statement supporting the suspension of deportations.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 9:00am-11:00am; Press Conference at 9:30am

WHERE: In front of the Broadview Detention Facility, 1930 Beach Street,Broadview,  Illinois

WHO: Immigrants facing deportation and their families, Illinois groups led by undocumented immigrants and allies including Undocumented Illinois, the Immigrant Youth Justice League, the Undocumented Student Alliance, the Latino Youth Action League and the Latino Organization of the Southwest

WHY: In 2012 the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced record-breaking deportations of over 409,000 people in the last year. In the past months, there was confirmation that DHS has focused on enforcement to meet an annual 400,000 person quota, and that a majority of the 1 million people deported in the last four years had no criminal record. Separation of families has been felt by the community and there is an urgent call to stop such practices.

Broadview Detention Center is the last stop for many people who are in the process of being deported. From the Broadview Detention Center those being deported are taken directly to O’Hare airport where they are put on a plane and flown out the country.

The Immigrant Youth Justice League (IYJL) is a Chicago-based organization led by undocumented organizers working towards full recognition of the rights and contributions of all immigrants through education, leadership development, policy advocacy, resource gathering, and mobilization.
