The world will watch the London 2012 Olympics come to a close tonight. Many successes have hit the headlines the past two weeks. New faces, new fans, and a newfound appreciation for competitive sports. But none made a bigger splash in the viral world than the scowl of a 16 year old gold medalist. McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Jordan Weiber, and Filipina-American Kyla Ross make up “The Fab Five” who won the Gold medal in London on July 31, 2012 in the Women’s Artistic Team All-Around.
A few days ago, a picture of Maroney was captured as she received a silver medal at last Sunday’s women’s vault final. This prompted a Tumblr blog entitled, “McKayla Is Not Impressed”. 28 year old, New York based digital & interactive designer, Gavin Alaoen, created the McKayla Is Not Impressed blog. What started as a Photoshopped cutout of Maroney, quickly turned into a user generated phenomenon. Alaoen has since then published the cutout picture of Maroney so that anyone could make their own meme. The Tumblr blog has begun posting outside submissions.
Alaoen said he’s a fan of similar Tumblrs, like Spock Is Not Impressed and Kim Jong-Il Looking at Things, but this was his first attempt at creating one...’It’s just a two-or-three-week kind of thing,’ Alaoen said. ‘It’s a hot topic right now. And then it’s onto the next one.’ As for Maroney? She was taking a tour of London on Wednesday with her teammates and tweeted a link to the blog from her iPhone. ‘This tumblr is kinda funny, made me laugh,’ she wrote.
Yesterday, McKayla turned to her personal Instagram account to show that she was still not impressed.
