In the face of adversity, most people would give up, but four contestants of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines 2013 did not. Black Eyed Peas member Apl.de.Ap and an all-handicap relay team, Team Todo Para Tri, inspired race watchers as they successfully completed the physically demanding event.
The men of Todo Para Tri finished fourth place in the relay despite being an amputee (Roland Sabido, swim) and bearing scars from poliomyelitis (Godfrey Paterna, bike & Sixto Sudukay, run). As a gold medalist in the National Paralympics swimming event, Sabido says that he hopes that their participation in this event provides inspiration to other Filipinos with disabilities to challenge themselves to overcome their handicaps.
Similar to Team Todo Para Tri, Apl.de.Ap hopes that his participation in the relay will help people who suffer from visual impairment triumph over their handicap. Early in his life, Apl suffered from retinal detachment that caused him to become clinically blind, but he hasn’t let his disability get the best of him – Apl successfully completed the 90km cycling portion of the relay. The crowd waiting at the race’s headquarters in the Shangri-la Mactan Resort and Spa erupted into cheers when he crossed the line.
“It was so much fun! Everyone was giving me tips and the crowd was so loud with their cheers which motivated me more,” he excitedly said.
