Top 10 Filipino Phrases Your Parents Say. And Let’s Be Honest, You Say Them Too.

Filipino Parents Say the Darndest Things

Filipino parents have some interesting ways of communicating, but they're at least memorable and mildly entertaining. There's nothing like a family get together to remind you of all the ways your parents embarrassed you growing up. But let's be honest, you say them too. Here are the Top 10 Filipino Phrases Your Parents Say

1. "Psst…Hoy!"

Well, that’s one way to get your attention.

Although, Psst sounds like what I would imagine you would say in order to get somebody’s attention inside a library.

And Hoy, really? What are we pirates?

3. "Comfort room" or "CR."

Such a strange word choice but I suppose the alternatives: bathroom and restroom aren’t entirely accurate either.

4. "Open" or "close" the light

5. "Did you eat yet?" "Are you still hungry?" "Bring home some for your baon."

Food is central to Filipino parties. And where there is food, there are relatives constantly asking if you are still hungry. Yet they are surprised when you gain a little weight.

6. "Everything I do is for your own good."

7. They call each other “Mommy” and “Daddy”

8. "Did you go to church?"

It’s usually a good idea to avoid calls on Sundays...

9. They’ll incorporate “gallivanting” in conversation somehow.

I’m not sure what they think we do when we go out, but I imagine they think it’s something like this:

10. "Are you going to the disco disco?"

Filipinos really like to say words twice for some reason: Halo halo, kare kare, tulog tulog.
