Doniare Wanted “Clean” Fight, Drug-Test Prior to Rigondeaux Bout
Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will be fighting Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux Saturday night to unify the world jr. featherweight title despite Team Rigondeaux’s inability to submit satisfactory drug-test results prior to their bout.
In a carefully worded statement released by Donaire’s camp, Donaire expressed frustration and disappointment in Rigondeaux for this blatant run-around, not expecting “it would be this hard to enforce drug-testing on my opponent.”
“I want to clarify that I am not accusing Rigondeaux of taking performance enhancing drugs but do not agree with the amount of time and wasted effort it took to secure drug testing that he previously agreed to. I am disappointed that instead of jumping at the opportunity to make this a fight remembered as one that is trying to change the drug testing game, it turned into one that spent more time slinging insults.”
Donaire (31-1, 20 KO) is a staunch opponent of Performance Enhancing Drugs and hopes that his stance on PEDs will help clean athletes “set a new standard in sports and prove you can be the best without drugs.”
