Destination Delano will hold an educational and historical excursion trip to the Central Valley of California

Destination Delano to Celebrate the 48th Anniversary of the 1965 Grape Strike in Central California

Today, the role of Filipinos in the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike has often been historically revised, restructured, obscured or even just universally ignored. On the weekend of September 28 & 29, 2013, the organization Destination Delano will hold an educational and historical excursion trip to the Central Valley of California, notably to Delano, CA and to Orosi, CA (near the Fresno area) to visit and tour the sites of where the Delano Grape strike took place. The weekend event brings members of the Filipino American community together for a weekend of community building and political strategy with an expert panel to discuss this important subject in 20th Century Filipino-American history, a tour of Delano's historical sites, caucus spaces, and guest speakers and performances.

"It's a kick off to Pilipino American History Month (PAHM) in the same month as the grape strike was started,” says Jacklyn Joanino, one of the main organizers of Destination Delano, “the role of Filipinos in the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike has been largely forgotten…Our goal is to recapture that history by telling our own story, and more importantly, to have this history accurately. The 1965 Grape Strike is our history, the history the Filipino people, the history of workers, immigrants, and people-of-color to gain basic human rights."

The goals of this weekend excursion include:
  1. Bring Filipinos & Filipino American organizations from all over California together to learn our buried history of the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike.
  2. Safeguard our last remaining Filipino American farming community in Orosi, California Central Valley.
  3. Seek a shared understanding among Filipinos of the significance of the 1965 Grape Strike.

The Destination Delano weekend excursion is inclusive of the following:
  • 2 days | 1 overnight stay | 6 meals (3 meals per day: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
  • Location dates: (Saturday) September 28 - Orosi, CA (Sunday) September 29 - Delano, CA
  • Symposium | Panel | Caucus space
  • Tour of Delano's historical sites
