This past Sunday, Filipino and Filipino-American Chicagoans celebrated our heritage and culture at second annual Piyesta Pinoy sa Chicago and Neighborhoods of the World event at Navy Pier. Thousands of people from the city and surrounding areas came to participate in the event, which hosted dozens of local businesses, schools, restaurants and musicians.
Throughout the day, attendees were encouraged to visit the booths set up around the Pier’s beautiful Crystal Gardens that displayed various arts and crafts, workshops, and informational material on tourism in the Philippines. For entertainment, local artists such as the Sama Sama Project, The Apuli Brothers, and the Chicago Pinoy Idol winners performed crowd favorites as well as traditional folk songs from the old country. Students from UIUC’s PSA Barkada and Loyola’s Kapwa delivered wonderful renditions in stunning costumes of traditional Filipino folk dances.
Finally, traditional Filipino food was of course available for purchase, along with delicious, modern fusion cuisine by Chicago’s Sunda New Asian restaurant.
