TULAY: Bridge to Help Fight Youth Suicide

 

APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR MAY 26-28, 2011

HOW TO APPLY: APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE APPLICANT INFORMATION AND SUBMIT REQUIRED MATERIALS VIA E-MAIL mpadua@barangayla.org. PLEASE REVIEW ALL GUIDELINES BELOW PRIOR TO STARTING YOUR APPLICATION.

ELIGIBILITY: MUST BE ABLE TO DELIVER SELECTED ART WORK TO MONKSPACE ART GALLERY NO LATER THAN 8:00PM

BARANGAY LA BACKGROUND

Established in 1989, Barangay Los Angeles has become a nationally recognized Filipino community organization supporting and focused on addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,  rueer/questioning issues. The organization has grown to serve over 100+ members offering free membership and a wide range of programming, from social events to free educational workshops and advocacy.

The organization is primarily funded through individual donations, business support and annual fundraisers to ensure quality programming.

ARTWORK OPPORTUNITY

Barangay LA is seeking over ten leading artists for a three day standing exhibit at a storefront gallery space of more than 1,300 sq ft, using diverse mediums, from paint to mixed-media, performance art to spoken word. All focused on exploring topics centered around preventing Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer Youth Suicide. Artists are tasked to explore cultural nuances relevant to the subject matter.

Some examples of cultural nuances are colonial mentality, crab mentality, model-minority expectations, machismo, marianismo, homophobia, collectivism, reciprocity, utang nang loob (gratitude), secular beliefs etc.

PROGRAM:

The program is designed to bring awareness to the greater community & a call-to-action for families to learn ways to help and assist the youth.

May 26: Art Gallery Opening Reception

A grand opening to welcome the artists and invite the community and families to meet the artists and sponsors in a safe environment surrounded by food, music and art.

May 27: Performance Art Night

Families can enjoy art on the wall, as well as over ten up-and-coming performance artists exploring new works focused on youth empowerment.

May 28: Symposium

Barangay LA will engage attendees to a solution-focused symposium. Consisting of community partners that are involved in providing family support, mental health, faith-based support, social services, as well as family members, they will be available for question and answer.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Selection Panel is composed of the curator and Barangay Los Angeles Board Members reviewing artwork samples and/or the actual exhibition art pieces. In submitting samples only please attach a statement/sketch/draft describing the concept for the final exhibit. The selection panel considers LGBTQ culture sensitivity and skillful execution of media chosen by the artist. Final selection is based on relevance to suicide prevention, thought provoking impact, artistic merit and strength of the piece(s). An applicant’s sample/conceptual images and statement must clearly convey their ability to execute their proposed art piece(s). Submit in JPEG format with at least 250 dpi resolution. Applicants may apply on line or hand deliver samples & statement. If selected, Barangay LA will send an e-mail notification with an attached consignment form for TULAY: Bridge to Help Fight Youth Suicide. Please submit the form on or before Friday, May 6, 2011. Works will be displayed in conjunction with other artists. Promotion includes a press release, website/social network updates, viral campaign and a program booklet. Any sales made will be 100% retained by the artist
