On April 12, 2013 Barangay Los Angeles, the longest running Filipino LGBTQ organization in the United States, recently hit another success for one of their signature events, Barangay Idol. The event was held once again at Café Club Fais Dodo in the Los Angeles Mid City area. Going on their 9th year, the competition featured 13 new and upcoming artists all competed for the title Barangay Idol 2013 Grand Prize Champion.
Peter Orlando, from Fort Lauderdale, FL, rose as the grand prize champion among the 13 contestants. Orlando performed a mash-up of an original song he wrote titled “I Wanna Fall” and along with the cover of “Hallelujah,” inspired by a cover from Alexandra Burke of X-Factor. “This experience of competing, rehearsals, and performing has been more rewarding than I ever imagined. No matter what the outcome last night would have been,[at the least] I made friends, [and] performed my newest and one of my most personal songs to an audience…” Orlando says in a recent statement after winning the competition.
Orlando also adds “Barangay Los Angeles is an organization I've recently learned about and now after witnessing what they do first hand, they will be one I will continue to follow and support. They are true to their cause and constantly striving to improve and strengthen their impact on our community.”
Dawn Nicdao, a nursing student from Los Angeles City College, was also awarded as the 1st runner for her performance of “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus. 2nd runner up trophy was awarded to Vida-Marie Adams, of Koreans United for Equality, who sang “This Used to be My Playground” by Madonna.
The venue was packed with more than 120 members and supporters. Singer KayGee and comedian Fifi Hermosa hosted the evening, and kept all audience occupied with their talents and punch line jokes. KayGee received a standing ovation for his cover performance of Jennifer Hudson’s “One Night Only.” While Fifi on the other hand also entertained the audiences with her sing and dance performance of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”
