BakitWhy Interviews Comedians Edwin San Juan and Justin Rivera
Filipinos take the mic in more ways than one.As many see Filipino-Americans exhibit their talents on the stage through song and dance, we sometimes overlook other artistic realms in which our Kababayan excel. It's not just Margaret Cho anymore--the number of Asian Americans comedians is growing, rocking the house all over the nation--and from different ethnic backgrounds like Vietnamese-American winner of NBC's Last Comic Standing Season 1, Dat Phan, and acclaim Filipino-American comedian Rex Navarrete. Fil-Ams are taking the mic and bringing light humor to familiar cross-cultural references, both Filipino and American.
BakitWhy.com goes behind the scenes in the Green Room at the Brea Improv to interview two Filipino Comedians: Edwin San Juan and Justin Rivera. "Roar of the Crowd" winner Edwin San Juan has made numerous appearances on BET's Comic View and appeared on NBC, PAX, and Showtime. San Juan is also taken the honor of being the only non-Latino comedian appearing on the Latino Comedy Fiesta Platium DVD series. You can currently find San Juan at the Hollywood Improv every 1st Thursday of the Month presenting his Slanted Comedy showcase or purchase his DVD, No Smoking Allowed. Justin Rivera is a Comedian-Magician from Chino Hills, CA. Performing magic tricks since he was 10 years old, he has turned his hobby into a career with a magical twist. Rivera has performed at several Comedy destinations throughout Southern California, including the Improv, Magic Castle and the IceHouse Comedy Club. Most recently you may have spotted Rivera with The Balut Comedy Tour or Slanted Comedy.
