Gender Confusion

| | Comments (1)

You may be familiar with parents confusing "he's" with "she's" and vice-versa. These (understandingly) little mistakes may come when you're thinking in one language and then speaking in another language, or just by accident!

It's a common mistake and I'm sure your parents, family (maybe even you) do it too!

Stacksvinyl.com FPAC Tribute to the Filipino DJ

Sunday, Sept. 7, 2:30pm

Parallel to this year's festival theme "Our Native Ways," the Stacksvinyl.com Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture Tribute to the Filipino DJ hearkens toward celebrating the "original" pioneers of DJ culture and also honoring those DJs who are making an impact on our community. Also called "turntablism," DJing has much to owe to the Filipino community. Aside from the elite cadre of Filipino American DJ veterans who impacted the DJ scene worldwide, the sheer magnitude of Filipino American DJs is worth celebrating.

During this 17th Annual FPAC we will highlight a few notable DJs who have each brought something special to both the DJ and Filipino American community.

Like the many layers of the Filipino American experience that make our community so unique, DJs navigate our ears through the many layers of beats and rhythm. Bringing to the DJ scene something "SOOO FRESSHHHHH," we want to pay tribute to not only our awardees, but to all Filipino American DJs who are moving the art forward!

Awardees:

DJ Kuttin Kandi
Candice L. Custodio-Tan known as DJ Kuttin Kandi is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished female DJ's in the world. She is a member of DJ team champions 5th Platoon, Founder and DJ for the all female Hip-Hop group Anomolies, Cofounder of the famed NY monthly open mic nights "Guerrilla Words" and Founder of the coalition R.E.A.C.Hip-Hop (Representing Education, Activism & Community through Hip Hop). DJ-ing for over 10 years, Kandi competed in over 20 DJ competitions such as ITF and Vibe. She is the NY Source Magazine DJ Champion and has been the only female DJ to make it to the DMC USA FINALs.

DJ Nasty Nes

At the age of ten, Nasty Nes moved to Seattle from the Philippines. Beginning in 1980, Nes hosted the first Hip-Hop radio show in the West Coast, "Freshtracks" on 1250 KFOX. Nes' 18 year career on radio has landed him on KFOX, KCMU, KUBE & on KDAY, KMEL. 1985, Nes co-founded, NASTYMIX Records with Sir Mix-A-Lot. Nes is featured on the late Eazy-E single "Radio!" Nes is one of the youngest students at the original Bruce Lee Jun Fan Gung-Fu Institute since 13 years old. As an actor Nes has been featured in films, "House Party 4" & "Kung Pow! Enter The Fist."

The BakitWhy SoCal BBQ... A Success!

| | Comments (2)

All of us at BakitWhy.com would like to say thank you to everyone that came out and supported us at our First Annual BakitWhy Southern California Barbecue! It would not have been a success without you. We wanted to put together an event that showed our appreciation for the support that our audience gave to BakitWhy over the past few months.

The Food...
We carefully thought about what we wanted to serve you guys that said "beach day" and yet be "SoCal-inspired." Thus, we offered delicious "BakitWhy" cheeseburgers and the famous bacon-wrapped hot dogs--Los Angeles "after the club" style! We also didn't forget about those who are conscious about eating meat with our uber-tasty Boca Burgers! They were so good that I personally couldn't tell the difference.

justin_rivera.jpgFrom being in first place dance teams to singing that high note on a Broadway stage, Pilipinos excel in countless ways. Through song, intellect, the arts, and of course, comedy, our talent is limitless.

One of BakitWhy's favorite funnymen, Justin Rivera - comedian and magician, measures his success in laughter. He's performed at several prestigious venues such as the Improv along with acclaimed comedians Edwin San Juan, Jo Koy, Ron Josol, Joey Guila, and more. Performing magic tricks since he was 10 years old, Justin has turned his passion into a rising career -- making the audience laugh with a sleight of hand and a bit of prestidigitation.

Justin now celebrates yet another milestone --  a national TV debut on Comedy Central's the Gong Show with Dave Attell. He invites everyone to watch and hope he brings a bit of joy to your evening. So help support our artists and see what he has up his sleeve (perhaps its a bunny, or even a carabao?)...

In February of 1995, an article, "Filipino Girls Think Suicide at No. 1 Rate," published by the San Diego Union-Tribune spoke truth to many young Pilipina/o Americans and community members. The article was a result of a survey issued to over 1,788 high school students in San Diego County.

Now, in 2008, an article in Time Magazine titled "A Family Suicide Risk in US Asians?" has been recently published and disseminated through many cultural, community and educational directories. Please take time to read the article here.

Often times, it can be difficult to talk through hardship, especially when things are rough at home and school, which are the two places that youth frequent. It's really important to talk about these things, your problems, to find support. A counselor once recommended this site to me, when a close friend of mine needed help. It can be really hard to support friends especially when we are carrying a lot of our own burdens. This is a real issue in our communities and there is a need to hear out voices who may feel silenced or dormant. Take time to talk things out and seek help if you need it. You are not alone.

This super Pilipina-American actress has had a long short and exceedingly successful history on the world famous video-sharing site, YouTube.  G4tv created this video and did a spotlight on Christine "HappySlip" Gambito, who is one of the most-subscribed people on YouTube.  Want to know about the history of the HappySlip phenomenon? Watch this video!

For those of you who can't get enough HappySlip and live in Southern California, you're in for a surprise! The Festival of Phillipine Arts and Culture (FPAC) in San Pedro, California on September 6-7 will feature Christine, who's going to perform her debut comedy set!  She'll also be chilling at the BakitWhy booth for a while.  If you want to meet a few YouTube stars, and make a vlog about your experience at the festival or with the general Pilipino-American community, then you have to come out to FPAC and stop by the BakitWhy booth!

FPAC Needs You!

The Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture has been a significant institution for many Pil-Ams in the Southern California area.  Many of us on BakitWhy.com have experienced FPAC in a very rewarding way--by being FPAC volunteers!  If you're in Southern California and want to be a big part of the festival, check out the dates below.

------
Are you free the week of the festival, Sept 1st - Sept 5th? Stop by the office and help out the FilAm Arts staff. We need folks who can help out with answering calls, giving the public pertinent information about the festival, and helping out with the week of preparation.

Are you free Friday, September 5th! We need awesome volunteers to help out with loading/unloading a U-haul truck of FPAC supplies, helping out set up on-site at Point Fermin Park (807 Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro, CA). Want to know how a big festival like FPAC gets set up? Help us out! Please contact lainey@filamarts.org or volunteer@filamarts.org.

Thanks!

Pinoy Adobo, part 1

| | Comments (1)
adobosma.jpg

I moved to the US relatively recently, and when I miss home, my reminiscing invariably turns to food. There are lots of contenders for the title of "Filipino National Dish" - sinigang, lumpia, and even the dreaded balut. But for me, nothing says "home" quite like adobo.

Historically, adobo is a Latin creation and refers to a marinade or group of spices (much like those in South Asian "curry"). Latin countries like Mexico and Puerto Rico use adobo spices already bottled - containing garlic, basil, salt, pepper and (typical for pre-packaged products) a bunch of preservatives. In Filipino cuisine, the preservative is white vinegar. A well-made chicken-pork adobo lasts for ages and in most cases doesn't even need refrigeration. This makes it ideal to bring on long roadtrips... which is where most of my "adobic memories" reside.
